How to choose your first electric bike

Start with your route, storage, and riding position. The right motor comes after.

The quick answer

Choose an electric bike around your regular route, a frame that fits, and a storage plan you can manage. Compare battery capacity, service support, and the complete cost before looking at peak motor power.

Start with the ride you actually do

Write down your usual distance, the steepest part of the route, and where you will park at each end. Include the trip home. A short errand loop and a long daily commute create very different priorities. Buy for the routine you expect to repeat, then leave room for the occasional longer outing.

Decide how you want to sit

An upright cruiser suits a relaxed pace and a clear view of the road. A more forward position may appeal if you already enjoy a sportier bicycle. Test the reach to the bars, the saddle adjustment, and how confidently you can mount and stop. Frame height recommendations are a starting point, not a complete fit assessment.

Make storage part of the decision

Measure the doorway, lift, hallway, and available floor space. If you will carry the bike, check the actual model weight, not a stripped-down figure. A removable battery can make charging more convenient, but it does not make a large bike compact.

Read the battery specification before the range claim

Watt-hours describe stored energy; a range claim describes a result under particular conditions. Terrain, assistance level, rider load, weather, and speed change the outcome. Plan charging around your own route and leave margin rather than shopping for the largest advertised distance.

Compare the whole ownership cost

Include assembly, a suitable lock, lights, luggage, delivery, and service. Ask who can work on the electronics and how replacement batteries are supplied. A useful local service arrangement can matter more than a small difference in the sticker price.
