The everyday commuter gear checklist

A considered setup for your bag, your bike, and the journey home.

The quick answer

Build your commuter setup around a properly fitted helmet, useful lights, a suitable lock, weather protection, and a reliable way to carry your bag. Check compatibility with your bike before adding accessories.

Choose the essentials around your routine

Set out your normal work bag and the equipment you need for a puncture or a change in weather. A repeatable setup is easier to live with than a collection of accessories you rarely use.

Helmet and visibility

Choose a helmet intended for your riding and follow its fitting instructions. Check light mounting points and charging arrangements. Integrated lights still need a routine check; carry a backup if an unlit ride home would leave you stranded.

Make parking practical

Select a lock that suits the location and any insurance requirements. Plan where it attaches to the bike without interfering with cables or wheels. A connected tracking feature is useful information, but physical parking security still matters.

Carry the bag on purpose

A compatible rack and pannier can move weight off your back. Check mounting standards, heel clearance, and the rack load limit. Confirm whether the bag needs its own rain cover.

Weather and roadside basics

Match tools, tubes, and inflation equipment to your wheels and valves. Learn the wheel-removal procedure for your bike, especially around a hub motor. For repairs beyond your comfort level, keep a service contact accessible.
